Change

Change
Change
Said the sun to the moon,
You cannot stay.

Change
Says the moon to the waters,
All is flowing.

Change
Says the fields to the grass,
Seed-time and harvest,
Chaff and grain.

You must change,
Said the worm to the bud,
Though not to a rose,

Petals fade
That wings may rise
Borne on the wind.

You are changing
said death to the maiden, your wan face
To memory, to beauty.

Are you ready to change?
Says the thought to the heart, to let her pass
All your life long

For the unknown, the unborn
In the alchemy
Of the world’s dream?

You will change,
says the stars to the sun,
Says the night to the stars. Kathleen Raine

Please take a moment and read the poem a second and third time. Enjoy its many transitions, images, thoughts. In short there cannot be life without change. Change gives birth to life and change brings possibility. Yes, at times we yearn for things to stay the same yet deep down we now such a wish is selfish and life ending rather than life giving. I am not very familiar with the poems of Kathleen Raine. Are you ready to change? I look forward to paying attention to her poems. Please see a short bio in the following link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathleen_Raine.

Prayer:
Lord God
“In the beginning”
thats what we first read when we
open your holy book.
as day follows night, and as
season follows season and
death follows birth so we
know that change
is part of life.
May change be part of me
even at times when I resist it,
deny it, push against it, may
I embrace it and be born
anew each and every day.
Holy God,
assure me and renew me and
journey with me as I seek to
journey as a follower, a pilgrim
along the road of
truth
love
grace
mercy.
Today and in all my
tomorrows. Amen.

  1. I like the poem, full of truth and inevitability. If I think back over the past few weeks I can count a dozen times when the word “change” came up in conversation; There’s been a lot of change in this town, said by a visitor returning after a long absence. He’s never going to change, said of the president. The doctor changed my eye drops, said by an old friend. That new building will really change the feel of the town square, said by a citizen objecting to a developer’s proposal. And so on…

Paired with each of those thoughts was tacit and deep emotion, not necessarily expressed outright, but definitely felt by those in conversation. It seems that this is the challenge of change, dealing with the associated emotion.

It’s a great poem, very grounding.
